Donuts by Scoolpt

This sculpture installation is placed outdoors on a flat, grassy lawn in Stromovka park. It features two large sculptural forms, both representing doughnuts. These doughnuts are not small or handheld in scale; they are monumental in size and made of solid concrete. They have a small round hole in the center. The fully rounded doughnut measures approximately 200 centimeters in diameter and stands about 50 centimeters tall. The second doughnut, set around 2 meters behind the first one, has a similar height and material but features a more abstract, segmented shape.

The sculptures rest directly on the grass. They have no visible foundation or separate plinth. Their base integrates seamlessly with the ground. The doughnuts seem to have two parts – an upper and a lower one, both of equal volume. The division seems to mimic the effect of deep-frying the sweet. And especially the lower parts of both forms expose the method of their construction. The doughnuts are constructed entirely from concrete that has been 3D printed in successive horizontal layers. This building method is clearly visible in the texture of the vertical surfaces. The pattern is regular, forming concentric ridges that gently curve around the rounded shapes of each piece. These ridges give a tactile quality and show the additive process used in the fabrication.

Both sculptures are glazed on the top surfaces with a smooth, glossy coating. The glaze is pinkish-brown in color and extends across the top of each piece, resembling a frosted or glazed doughnut surface. Light reflects softly off the curved tops, enhancing their rounded appearance. Scattered across the glazed surfaces are small, delicately colored spots, primarily in white and red, mimicking the look of sprinkles. These elements are a mosaic, broken pieces of ceramic embedded in the surface of the donut. They are almost smooth to the touch.

The side surfaces contrast with the tops. They remain matte and unglazed, allowing the raw texture of the layered concrete to show through. These areas are lighter, coloured in beige, further emphasizing the construction method. At the beginning we told you that one donut is perfectly round. And the other one has a slightly different shape. It was – so to speak – eaten almost one third!
