The sculpture ‘Ascension’ is entirely yellow. The same intense colour covers the base, the metal beams and the body of the figure represented in the sculpture. As a result, all the parts look like one object, although they clearly differ in form.
At the bottom, on the grass, there is a flat, square base. It lies horizontally on the ground and has little thickness. From its centre grows a simple, technical construction. It consists of two beams crossed with each other, which resemble a simple lamp frame. This element is needed to raise above the ground the main subject of the representation – a human figure suspended in the air. The sculpture connects with it at the calves of the figure. Attention is drawn to the fact that the author of the work did not want to “hide the frame”. He made it as a simple, undecorative form and kept it in the intense yellow colour.
At a height of about one and a half metres, there is a human figure. The body is as if suspended horizontally, as if rising upwards. The figure is turned with its torso towards the sky and its face towards the viewers. The figure is slightly androgynous, but it is rather a slender man. His body has a drawn line of muscles. It is smooth, shaved. The head is shaved in the same way. The man is naked. On the back and shoulders, the tension of the muscles can be seen. The body is posed symmetrically. The line of the legs, torso and head is slightly bent, bulging. The torso and chest are pushed upwards, the legs drop slightly towards the ground. The head is tilted downwards. Thanks to this, viewers can see the man’s face.
The arms are spread widely to the sides. They create a long, almost horizontal line, which strongly widens the upper part of the sculpture. The hands are elongated and lowered at the wrists. The fingers point downwards. The arrangement of the arms resembles a gesture of spreading the body in the air.
The head is located between the arms, lower than the back and shoulders. The face has simplified, but clear features. The face is ideally proportioned, classically beautiful. The man’s eyes are closed. The portrayed figure seems to be filled with calm and trust, which contrasts with the situation of the suspension or stopping of the body in space. The facial expression, the posing of the face and the gesture of the man’s falling hands give it an almost meditative character
